How does the covalent bonding for the compound cl2 work?

I'm supposed to animate the change from an atom to a compound for cl2 and have absolutely no idea how it works. I know they have to share the dots on their dot diagram, but that's basically it. Could somebody tell me how in a simple way? Thank you.
