Should i ride a road bike on my daily commute?

it a short ride, about 10 minute back and 7 minutes down. The road is incredibly steep, considered the steepest in the entire area. i only see bikers walking up it. but it is paved. i drive it at 3 am though. i was give a bike that is too large for me. it needs some fixes. new chain, and maybe more. should i ride it anyway?
