Is atheism the new status quo?

Or has R&S skewed my perception? I keep having this "60% of the new generation are atheists" statistic flung in my face. If that is true, then why such strong convictions about defending secularism against a perceived Christian threat? Why not simply vote according to your secular value system? If the numbers are in your favor, then what is there to fear?
